Here’s The Scoop
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is under fire after a speech she gave in Somali, expressing irredentist views about her homeland, Somalia.
The controversial speech has led to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) calling for her expulsion from Congress and the United States.
In the speech, Omar vowed to advance Somali interests through her position in Congress and sway the United States to support the Somali government over land disputes with Ethiopia. Conservative figures online have openly questioned her loyalty to the United States.
DeSantis made his stance clear, saying, “Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport!” in response to Omar’s speech.
Omar, however, hit back by mocking DeSantis’ failed 2024 presidential campaign.

The original translation of the speech was posted by an ambassador of Somaliland, a region that broke off from Somalia. Omar and her defenders claim the translation was edited deceptively.
Nonetheless, the translation shared by Omar still shows her vowing to use her position in the U.S. government to advance the interests of her homeland.
Elon Musk chimed in, stating that Omar “doesn’t sound loyal to the United States.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized Omar, calling her a “terrorist sympathizer” and accusing her of prioritizing Somalia and her Muslim faith over America.
Omar’s position on Somali land disputes has also been questioned due to her father’s prominent role in the Somali army, which coincided with the Isaaq genocide. However, it remains unknown whether he played a role in the atrocities.
