The looming solar eclipse has ignited the imagination of conspiracy theorists across America. Next week a rare spectacle will occur, as the moon will pass between the earth and the sun, rendering the face of the sun invisible while its corona radiates around the moon’s silhouette. This astronomical event is set to occur over fifteen states, from Texas’s major cities to the frosty reaches of Montreal.

Yet, amid the anticipation, a number of outlandish theories have taken root in the fertile ground of social media. One such theory, gaining traction on platforms like TikTok, suggests that the eclipse will pass over seven or eight U.S. cities named Nineveh, an ominous echo of the ancient Biblically damned city. These theorists argue that the eclipse’s trajectory signifies a ‘born again’ event, a harbinger of new beginnings or, perhaps, divine judgment.

This theory has been stirred by zealous online voices quoting scripture to reinforce their claims. “Oh, did you know there was a total eclipse the very day Jonah preached a warning to Nineveh? Nineveh repented. Will America?” posts one user on X, the former Twitter. Some even credit the eclipse for Nineveh’s receptiveness to Jonah’s prophecy.

Notwithstanding the viral nature of these conjectures, they are largely debunked by Snopes. Worthy of note is that most of these theorists are Christians interpreting the eclipse as a potential bad omen.

As we await the eclipse, which will provide up to 4 minutes and 27 seconds of darkness in some areas, let’s remember to watch this marvel safely. The skies will darken, but the light of reason should guide our interpretation of this celestial event.
