Does RFK Jr. Have a Shot at the Presidency?

Here’s the Scoop

Is RFK Jr. even in the running for President? According to former President Trump, it seems that’s a resounding no.

When recently asked if he would go head-to-head with independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump didn’t mince words — he remarked that Kennedy was “not a serious candidate” and cited his “low” polling numbers.

When asked if he would debate RFK Jr., Trump responded:

“RFK, I don’t know anything about him,” Trump said.

“Look, RFK is polling very low, he is not a serious candidate. They say he hurts Biden; I don’t know who he hurts, he might hurt me, I don’t know. But he has very low numbers, certainly not numbers that he can debate with. He’s got to get his numbers a lot higher before he’s credible.”

Trump’s remarks came Thursday in New York City, where he’s currently entangled in a hush money trial. Despite his legal battles, the former president remains the presumptive GOP nominee and a key player on the political stage.

But what of RFK Jr.? His polling numbers, according to Trump, are far from impressive. So much so, that the former president questioned the credibility of Kennedy’s candidacy.

Yet, Trump’s dismissal hasn’t deterred Kennedy who fired back, praising Trump as the “most adept debater in modern American political history.” Kennedy wants a face-off on the debate stage, but does he have the support to warrant it?

Recent polling data suggests that Trump has a slight edge over President Biden when Kennedy is thrown into the mix. However, an NBC News poll found Biden leading Trump by a narrow 2 points when third-party candidates were included.

Trump’s campaign has requested the Commission on Presidential Debate (CPD) to move up the debate date. Meanwhile, Biden is reportedly “happy” to debate Trump.

In the latest polling average, Trump leads by 0.6 percentage points, while Kennedy lags behind in third place with 8.5 percent support. It seems Trump’s dismissal of Kennedy may not be entirely unfounded, but only time will tell.
