Is the Movie Business Over?

Here’s the Scoop

The curtain is falling on Hollywood’s golden era. No less a figure than comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld has come forward to declare, “The movie business is over.” Seinfeld, who is currently promoting his latest Netflix film “Unfrosted,” let this bombshell drop during a recent GQ interview.

Seinfeld, a newcomer to the movie industry, was shocked by the seriousness of those within it. He observed, “They have no idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea.” A rather grim prognosis from an industry outsider, wouldn’t you agree?

Movies, he boldly argues, have lost their societal and cultural hold. Gone are the days when a good film release was a shared cultural experience, where audiences flocked to theaters and eagerly discussed their favorite scenes. “Now we’re walking through a fire hose of water, just trying to see,” Seinfeld laments.

So, what has replaced the movie industry’s cultural hegemony? Seinfeld wryly suggests a rather bleak replacement: “Depression? Malaise? I would say confusion. Disorientation replaced the movie business.”

Interestingly, Seinfeld compares the crumbling film industry to stand-up comedy, implying that the latter has a more authentic connection with audiences. “It’s something you can’t fake,” he says. “That’s what people like about stand-up. They can trust it. Everything else is fake.”

It’s a hard pill to swallow, but perhaps Seinfeld’s words serve as a wake-up call to a bloated industry that has lost touch with its audience. The question is, will they listen, or will they continue to live in denial, blind to their impending irrelevance?
