Here’s The Scoop
In a move that has sparked heated debate, Canada’s left-wing administration, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has mandated that all federally regulated employers must provide free feminine hygiene products in all restrooms, including men’s. This regulation, which came into effect earlier this month, is a clear example of the Trudeau administration’s continued push for progressive policies.
The new rules dictate that menstrual products must be available in “all toilet rooms, regardless of their marked genders,” according to Canada’s Employment and Social Development website. This means that even restrooms identified as male or all-gender must be stocked with these products. The policy is designed to “better protect menstruating employees” and ensure they feel safe using the restroom that best reflects their gender.
This policy applies to all federal public service departments, crown corporations, banks, airports, and train yards. The products are intended for employee use, not for the general public. Employers are also required to provide a covered container for the disposal of these products in each restroom.
The policy change has not been without controversy. Former Canadian conservative Senator Linda Frum posted a picture of a basket of products inside a men’s bathroom for transgender members of Parliament, sparking a firestorm online. Her post, which highlighted the stark change in policy, generated nearly 900,000 views.
This move by the Canadian government follows years of lobbying by various advocacy groups. The question remains, however, whether such policies will become the norm globally, or if they will remain a hallmark of Trudeau’s progressive Canada.
