Should English Be the Official Language of the US?

Here’s the Scoop
In a long-overdue move, U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and JD Vance (R-OH) have introduced the English Language Unity Act, a bill that would establish English as the official language of the United States.
As Senator Cramer rightly points out, “Our Founding Fathers used English to create the most precious and fundamental document of all time.” It’s high time we recognize the importance of English in our nation’s history and governance.
Senator Vance adds that “the overwhelming majority of the American people support this proposal.” Indeed, it’s a commonsense legislation that acknowledges the role of English as the cornerstone of American culture for over 250 years.
This bill would require the federal government to use English in practical situations, such as when it acts with binding legal authority or conducts naturalization ceremonies.
Critics might argue that this legislation is limiting, but they couldn’t be more wrong. The English Language Unity Act does not widely restrict the use of foreign languages, which remain essential for official reasons related to national security, international relations, trade, tourism, public safety and health, and protecting victims’ rights, among others.
In conclusion, the English Language Unity Act is a much-needed step towards codifying the place of the English language in our laws and institutions. It’s time for Congress to act and recognize the importance of English as the unifying language of our great nation.
