Here’s the Scoop

The left’s latest attack on traditional American values comes in the form of granting voting rights to minors. Newark City Council in New Jersey has unanimously voted to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in school board elections. Council President LaMonica McIver, who sponsored the measure, claims that these minors deserve representation.

The reasoning behind this decision is that these teenagers can take on responsibilities like driving, paying taxes, and working. But are they truly mature enough to make decisions that will affect their communities? Councilman Lawrence Crump seems to think so, stating that minors today are “much more mature, much more advanced” than in the past.

This move sets a dangerous precedent, as Councilman Dupre Kelly suggests that granting voting rights in school board elections is just the beginning. Councilwoman Louise Scott-Rountree even goes as far as to say that it’s Biblical to afford voting rights to minors.

Councilman Carlos Gonzalez, however, expresses concern about the slippery slope of lowering the voting age further. He questions whether these minors have the financial wisdom to handle the responsibility of a billion-dollar budget.

The push for minor voting rights is credited to two young activists, Anjali Krishnamurti and Yenjay Hu, who co-founded Vote16NJ, a state spinoff of a national campaign, Vote16USA. This organization is a project of Generation Citizen, a progressive New York-based nonprofit with top funders including the Ford Foundation, Bezos Family Foundation, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

It’s clear that the left is determined to reshape American democracy by giving minors the right to vote. We must stand vigilant against this erosion of our traditional values and ensure that the future of our nation remains in the hands of responsible, mature citizens.
