A shocking display of anti-American and anti-Israel sentiment erupted in Michigan last week, where activists chanted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” at an Al-Quds Day rally in Dearborn.

What’s even more stunning is the deafening silence that followed from Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

More than a week passed before Whitmer finally deemed it necessary to condemn the hateful rhetoric, proclaiming it doesn’t represent Michigan or Dearborn. Conveniently, this condemnation was only “prepared and provided to media upon request”, raising questions about the Governor’s sincerity and commitment to addressing extremism in her jurisdiction.

While Whitmer seemingly enjoyed her week-long silence, the Biden administration was quick to denounce the abhorrent and anti-Semitic remarks. There are some in the Democratic camp who understand the urgency of responding to such hateful rhetoric.

The blatant anti-American chants at the rally are a chilling reminder of the growing radicalism in our society. This display of extremism was held in Dearborn, which has the highest per capita Muslim population in the country.

Governor Whitmer’s delayed response is a clear example of a politician failing to swiftly and decisively address extremism. The citizens of Michigan deserve better. They deserve leaders who won’t stay silent in the face of hatred but will stand up for their values and the principles that make this country great. Extremism in any form should not be tolerated, let alone ignored.
