Here’s the Scoop
The ominous bells of voter discontent are ringing for President Biden, with young Democrats signaling that his reelection might be but a mirage unless he radically course-corrects on pivotal issues such as the Gaza conflict.
The President’s popularity among the youth has seen a precipitous decline, with protests erupting across college campuses nationwide. Elise Joshi, the executive director of Gen-Z for Change, warns that Biden’s lackluster stance on Gaza could be the final straw that breaks the camel’s back.
With Biden’s support among 18-29-year-olds plummeting from 60% to 45% in a recent Harvard Youth Poll, it seems the President has lost touch with the demographic that once rallied behind him.
Adding salt to the wound, a CNN poll reveals Biden trailing Trump by 11 percentage points amongst young voters. A harsh reality check for a President who has been complacent in addressing the issues that matter most to this demographic.
Kidus Girma, campaign director at the Sunrise Movement, calls out Biden’s lack of engagement with young voters, urging him to adopt a progressive mandate, particularly on the issue of Gaza. He emphasizes that the path to tranquility on college campuses lies in heeding the calls of young Americans demanding peace and an end to unconditional military aid.
Despite the President’s attempts to engage young voters through various means, his administration’s handling of the Gaza crisis appears to be a serious stumbling block. Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy, notes that Biden’s handling of the Gaza situation could be a significant drag on his reelection bid.
As the President scrambles to regain favor with young voters, one thing is certain – his path to reelection is far from assured.
