In a world where robots are becoming more prevalent, it seems they’re not only taking over jobs but also cashing in on tips.

Meet Jarvis, the AI-powered barista-bot causing a stir at the Japanese home goods store Muji in Hudson Yards. This one-armed mechanical wonder dances, makes eye contact, and even compliments customers’ beverage choices.

But what’s truly shocking is that this cold, emotionless machine is prompting customers to tip it on a tablet screen.

As if it’s not enough that these machines are replacing human workers, now they’re guilt-tripping customers into leaving gratuities. Jarvis, with its HAL 9000-looking mechanical retina, can lock eyes with you and evoke enough guilty pressure to leave 20%. What’s next, robot waiters demanding a share of your paycheck?

Since being installed last June, Jarvis has been guided by QR codes placed above all items at its workstation. It picks up a cup, places it under an ice machine or milk froth area, and projects the customer’s name onto the pickup counter with an approximate wait time before serving a drink. The novelty of Jarvis’ mechanical mastery alone is enough for customers to willingly tip on their already pricey orders.

While some may argue that this technology is “positive” because people can spend more time focusing on themselves and their families thanks to easier workloads, we must consider the consequences of allowing robots to infiltrate our daily lives.

Are we prepared to surrender our hard-earned cash to emotionless machines? Or should we stand up and demand that human workers receive the tips they deserve?

In the end, it’s up to us to decide whether we’re willing to tip a robot cashier or not. But one thing is for sure – the rise of the machines is upon us, and we must be prepared to face the consequences.
