Here’s the Scoop
This week, the world’s first passenger flight in a flying car took place in Slovakia, marking yet another milestone for KleinVision’s hybrid vehicle, the AirCar. French music legend Jean-Michel Jarre, a known tech enthusiast, had the privilege of experiencing this mind-blowing innovation, describing the airborne journey as an “amazing experience.”
Developed by Professor Stefan Klein and Anton Zajac, the AirCar has been turning heads with its ability to transform from a sports car to an airplane in mere minutes. Its list of feats includes more than 200 successful takeoffs and landings and the distinction of being the first flying car to complete an intercity flight.
The AirCar, a 1,000kg two-seat dual-mode prototype, boasts foldable wings and a propeller, requiring just 300m of runway to ascend. Capable of reaching speeds up to 120mph and heights of 8,000 feet, it currently runs on a 1.6L BMW engine, although plans to transition to electric power are on the horizon.
Zajac envisions the AirCar on the market within a year, a bold claim in light of the Slovakian government’s Future of Flight action plan forecasting flying taxis by 2030. However, ambitious as it may seem, owning and operating this high-tech vehicle won’t be as simple as buying a new family car. Potential pilots will need both a driver’s license and a pilot’s license, plus a specialized flying course.
The question remains: Would you feel safe soaring above congested roads in your own flying car? The “commute of the future” might be closer than we think.
